Bingley is set to benefit from a multi-million pound cash injection from government – which will secure its much-needed new pool, it has been announced.
Chancellor Jeremy Hunt announced the £14.5 million investment, which will also pay for the market square to receive a make-over, during his spring Budget today.
Shipley MP Philip Davies has been lobbying ministers to secure cash for a new pool and wider investment in the town.
Welcoming the news, Philip said: “I am absolutely delighted that government is investing nearly £14.5 million in Bingley and that we will finally get our new pool as well as additional money to improve the market square.
“The previous pool was run down and closed as part of the mismanagement of Bradford Council, to the detriment of my constituents. I have been working hard ever since to secure funding for this new pool, both privately in meetings with ministers as well as publicly through raising the issue on the floor of the House at every possible opportunity. I raised it most recently with the Prime Minister in Prime Minister’s Questions just a matter of weeks ago.”
Levelling Up Minister Jacob Young contacted Bradford Council to inform them of the investment following the announcement by the Chancellor.
Mr Davies added: “I am thrilled that not only are we going to get a new pool but also money for improvements around the town, which could include things like landscaping public space between the new leisure centre and other town centre attractions. Government ministers have said to me on many occasions they are committed to delivering for my constituents and I am pleased they have been true to their word. This investment will be very welcomed by many.”
