MORE LEVELLING UP - UPDATE
Chancellor Gives Money For Re-Opening of Bingley Pool and Market Square Makeover
Bingley is set to benefit from a multi-million pound cash injection from government – which will secure its much-needed new pool. Chancellor Jeremy Hunt announced the £14.5 million investment, which will also pay for the market square to receive a make-over, during his spring Budget on 6th March.
Shipley MP Philip Davies has been lobbying ministers to secure cash for a new pool and wider investment in the town. Welcoming the news, Philip said: “I am absolutely delighted that government is investing nearly £14.5 million in Bingley and that we will finally get our new pool as well as additional money to improve the market square.
“The previous pool was run down and closed as part of the mismanagement of Bradford Council, to the detriment of my constituents. I have been working hard ever since to secure funding for this new pool, both privately in meetings with ministers as well as publicly through raising the issue on the floor of the House at every possible opportunity. I raised it most recently with the Prime Minister in Prime Minister’s Questions just a matter of weeks ago.”
Mr Davies added: “I am thrilled that not only are we going to get a new pool but also money for improvements around the town, which could include things like landscaping public space between the new leisure centre and other town centre attractions. Government ministers have said to me on many occasions they are committed to delivering for my constituents and I am pleased they have been true to their word. This investment will be very welcomed by many.”
Levelling Up Minister Jacob Young called in at the Bingley Pool the day after the funding announcement to see the pool project for himself and to chat with Bradford officers regarding the challenge ahead. The government wants the work to start in earnest very soon and has set some timescales regarding completion dates.
BETTER ROAD & TRANSPORT NETWORKS - UPDATE
Government has now promised to pay for the whole Shipley Eastern By-Pass in full.
MP PHILIP DAVIES campaigned for HS2 to be scrapped and the money used to fund road and rail projects across the North. The Prime Minister has now announced that the Birmingham to Manchester leg of HS2 is to be stopped.
Network North is instead investing £36 billion to fix roads, tackle congestion and improve railway connections, benefitting us locally. Bradford will be getting a new railway station for the city, and Shipley will be getting an Eastern By-pass, which will help shorten car journey times across West Yorkshire and ease congestion on our local roads. Philip has campaigned for the Shipley Bypass for many years and has now persuaded the government to pay for the whole project in full. Unbelievably Labour run Bradford Council are still dragging their feet in building this much needed road!
